Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, was on a working visit in Bangladesh on April 02, 2024.

Within the framework of the visit, Rosatom Director General had a working meeting with Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the Republic of Bangladesh, where the Parties discussed the issues of Russian-Bangladeshi strategic cooperation in the field of use of atomic energy in peaceful purposes.

“Thanks to Russia for their help in building energy security in Bangladesh, especially in setting up a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, which was a dream of Bangabandhu. We are interested in building another nuclear power plants at Rooppur, if there is any scope to do so. Technical survey needs to be conducted for setting up of two more power units. We need your support in constructing new power units after completion of the ongoing project. I would request you to utilize Bangladeshi expertise in other nuclear power plant construction projects,” said Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

“The implementation of Rooppur NPP construction project is approaching one of the most important milestones – the physical start-up of Unit 1 which is to take place before the end of the year. Currently we are starting the discussion of new projects. The Bangladeshi Party expresses a strong interest in the construction of two more power units at Rooppur NPP site. Besides, the possibility of construction of a multi-purpose high power research reactor in Bangladesh is being reviewed. The research reactor will be able to resolve the tasks in the field of science and nuclear medicine,” said Alexey Likhachev.

In the course of the visit, Alexey Likhachev visited Rooppur NPP construction site (the general designer and general contractor is Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division) and Green City, the residential settlement of Rooppur NPP.

Rooppur NPP equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors of the total 2400 MW capacity is being constructed under the Russian design 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors that had been successfully implemented at two units of Novovoronezh NPP was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design which fully complies with all the international safety requirements.

The Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division unites the leading companies of the nuclear industry, namely: Atomstroyexport JSC (Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, branch offices in Russia and abroad), Joint Design Institute – Atomenergoproekt JSC (Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, and St. Petersburg branch offices and design institutes, branch offices in Russia and abroad, R&D branches) and subsidiary construction companies.

The Engineering Division ranks first in the world by the order portfolio and the number of NPPs constructed simultaneously across the world.

About 80% of the Division’s revenues originate from foreign projects.

The Engineering Division implements construction projects for high-power NPPs in Russia and across the world, renders a full range of EPC, EP, EPC(M) services including project management and design activities, and develops Multi-D technologies for the management of complex engineering facilities. The Division relies on the achievements of the Russian nuclear industry and innovative state-of-the-art technologies.

We construct reliable and safe NPPs with Gen III+ VVER reactors that are in line with all international requirements and recommendations. www.ase-ec.ru/en
