The delegation fr om the National Research and
Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BRIN), headed by Chairman Dr.
Arif Satria, visited Russia. As part of the visit, a meeting with the
management of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation took place in Moscow on
April 8.
“Russia and Indonesia have strong potential for developing cooperation in the nuclear sector. Rosatom offers an integrated approach that takes into account Indonesia’s needs and covers the entire lifecycle of nuclear projects. We also expect that our partnership will strengthen technological ties between our countries and provide momendum for cooperation in other areas, including nuclear medicine, science, and human capital development,” said Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation.
“BRIN highly appreciates Rosatom’s industrial expertise and uniquely broad international portfolio. Together, we remain committed to elevating our partnership to a new level for the development of the nuclear industry in Indonesia,” said Dr. Arif Satria.
The parties also discussed joint educational and
outreach initiatives. Currently, Indonesian students are studying
nuclear-related disciplines at leading Russian universities, participating in the
HackAtom competition, Forum of Women in Science and Industry and joint training
programs.
As part of the visit, on April 10, the Indonesian delegation visited the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (Udomlya, Tver Region), wh ere they became acquainted with advanced Russian nuclear technologies and operational practices, as well as Rosatom’s production culture and the development of infrastructure in cities.
Russia and Indonesia share a long-standing history of
cooperation in the nuclear field. The year 2026 marks an important milestone –
the 20th anniversary of the intergovernmental Agreement on the
Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. The Agreement was signed on
December 1, 2006, and laid the foundation for bilateral cooperation between
Russia and Indonesia in the nuclear industry.
The Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (a branch of
Rosenergoatom Concern JSC in the town of Udomlya, Tver Region) comprises four
power units with water-water energetic reactors (VVER-1000), each with an
installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The plant generates 82% of all electricity
produced in the Tver Region, 14% of electricity in Russia’s Central Federal
District, and about 15% of the total electricity output of Rosenergoatom
Concern JSC. The enterprise is a major employer in the region: together with
contractor organizations, the plant provides jobs for about 30% of the working-age
population of the Udomlya municipal district.
Indonesia’s National Power Development Plan, starting from 2025, includes the introduction of nuclear generation, which creates additional opportunities for cooperation with Rosatom.
