On 26 September 2025, Moscow hosted the annual conference of the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform held as part of the World Atomic Week (WAW-2025). The conference discussed the results of 2025 in the field of nuclear energy.

The event brought together heads of companies and organizations that are the Platform participants and partners from Brazil, Vietnam, Egypt, Iran, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Turkey, and the ASEAN Energy Hub.

Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General and Head of the IAEA's Nuclear Energy Department; Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association; Razib Dawood, Executive Director of the ASEAN Energy Centre; and Julio Lopes, a federal deputy from Rio de Janeiro and the leader of the Brazilian parliamentary front for technology and nuclear activities addressed their greetings to all participants and guests of the event.

The conference that was attended by representatives from participating and partnering organizations discussed the interim results, plans for 2026 and approved the first strategic document of the Platform: a concept that outlines focus areas (HR development; fund raising for nuclear energy projects; supply chain sustainability; promotion of reactor construction and nuclear fuel cycle technologies; public acceptance of nuclear energy; etc.) and the vectors for the Platform’s organizational development.

Elsie Pule, Chief Coordinator of the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform, spoke about the increasing role of the BRICS and its partners in shaping the new global energy landscape. According to her, the group accounts for almost one-third of operating NPPs and more than 70% currently under-construction power units. Elsie Pule predicted that the BRICS’s share would be least two-thirds of all new nuclear capacity added to the global NPP fleet by 2030.

During an official ceremony at the conference, the Brazilian company Nucleo Brasil Energia Participações Ltd. signed a statement supporting the creation of the Platform.

The BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform aims at strengthening cooperation among companies with the view of promoting nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly source of energy. Nine participating companies and government agencies of the BRICS members and partners, including CNNC (China National Nuclear Corporation); NECSA (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation); South African Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. (South African nuclear energy company); NPPD (Nuclear Power Production and Development Company of Iran); Brazilian association for nuclear activities development ABDAN (Associação Brasileira para Desenvolvimento de Atividades Nucleares), Bolivian nuclear energy agency ABEN (Agencia Boliviana de Energía Nuclear); Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia; NPPA (Nuclear Power Plants Authority, Egypt) and Rosatom (Russia) signed the statements supporting the creation of the Platform. In 2024, companies, organizations, and governments from nine countries held two high-level meetings. During 2025, major industry venues host the Platform’s expert events. Rosatom is actively involved in the Platform's initiatives, contributing to the development of equitable partnership in the nuclear industry and to the promotion of sustainable energy solutions.

The World Atomic Week International Forum, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, is being held at Moscow VDNKh from 25 to 28 September 2025. The Forum organized by Rosatom, includes the exhibition of the achievements of the Russian nuclear industry and its partners. The business program features thematic tracks such as: "Affordable Clean Energy", "Industrial Innovations: Improving Production", "Ecology: Making the Planet Cleaner", "Advanced Medicine: Protecting Human Health", "Digital Breakthrough", "Mobility: Logistics Without Borders", "Comfortable Environment", and "Science and Education: Driver of Progress". The youth program (from 27 to 28 September) includes the scientific and educational marathon "Knowledge. Pioneers” organized by the Russian society Znaniye within the framework of the national project "Youth and Children". The Forum also includes the II Youth Festival "Composites Without Borders". www.worldatomicweek.com

In 2025, the Russian nuclear industry celebrates its 80th anniversary. On 20 August 1945, Russia established a special nuclear energy committee. In response to the threat posed by the United States, the country created nuclear weapons within four years(RDS-1 bomb successfully tested in 1949). This saw the USSR becoming a pioneer and leader in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Domestic atomists built the first nuclear power plant in Obninsk in 1954 and the first nuclear icebreaker Lenin in 1959 to help explore the Arctic. The main theme of the anniversary year can be expressed in three words: pride, inspiration, and dream. The industry founders’ feats have been a source of pride for nuclear scientists, who are inspired by the achievements of previous generations. They are also intended to push forward and expand the possibilities. The celebration of the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry is suggested to include a number of events, with the main ones being the performance in Nizhny Novgorod on 20 August and the World Atomic Week international forum that is being held in Moscow from 25 to 28 September.

Russia is actively developing its scientific and technological cooperation with all interested nations. Underway are major international projects with active participation of Rosatom and its divisions.
