The concreting of the turbine hall floor slab for Unit 4 at 18 meters
elevation has been completed at the Akkuyu NPP site (under construction by
Rosatom). Concreting the floor slab is the process of creating a robust
horizontal support that imparts rigidity to the structure and enables it to
withstand the high dynamic loads generated by operating equipment, in
accordance with design requirements. The concrete slab cast at 18 meters elevation will
serve as the turbine hall floor. This floor will provide access for the
maintenance of major equipment, including the turbine, the barring gear, and
the generator.
A highly skilled workforce of 120 people (in two shifts) carried out the work. The specialists performed a series of sequential operations: installing reinforcement, placing 1801 m3 of concrete using pumps, and vibrating the mix to eliminate voids.
Upon completion of the preceding work, Akkuyu NPP specialists moved on to the next major construction stage – preparing the foundation for the turbine generator. Before concrete pouring begins, several stages are to be completed: installing complex reinforcement cages made of 308 tons of high-strength steel; installing embedded parts and anchor assemblies totaling 69 tons; and erecting formwork capable of withstanding the pressure of a massive volume of concrete – 2238 m3. Prior to the pour, a rigorous geodetic survey will be conducted to ensure there are no slightest deviations in the foundation axes that would be impermissible for the installation of the turbine generator.
"This major Russian-Turkish project is entering a significant and interesting stage. Work is underway on all four units, with new facilities – meeting high industry standards for reliability and load-bearing capacity – being added to the existing infrastructure. These are tangible results that can be seen firsthand. A key stage in the construction of the Unit 4 turbine hall has been completed – a complex, multi-step process that demanded ultra-precision from the team at every stage. Timely execution of work in strict compliance with design specifications is the key to the uninterrupted operation of Akkuyu NPP throughout its entire service life.", said Akkuyu Nuclear JSC Chief Executive Officer Sergei Butсkikh.
Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant being built in the Republic
of Türkiye. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units equipped with
Generation 3+ VVER reactors of Russian design. The capacity of each power unit
will be 1200 MW. Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry
being implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate business model.
The turbine hall or turbine compartment is one of the main components of the power units of a nuclear power plant. It is here that the energy of the heated steam entering from the reactor hall is converted into the mechanical energy of turbine rotation, and subsequently – in the turbo generator – into electrical energy. The foundation of the turbo generator withstands the dynamic loads of rotating equipment and provides a stable position of the turbine and generator when working at a high rotation rate.
