Rosatom participated in Türkiye’s NPPES-2025 key nuclear forum

In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, representatives of Rosatom State Corporation spoke about promising technological solutions for the global nuclear energy industry
Press release

Rosatom State Corporation took an active part in the VII International Exhibition and the XI Nuclear Industry Summit NPPES-2025 in Istanbul (Türkiye), which ended on July 2, 2025.

At the opening ceremony, Anton Dedusenko, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC (Rosatom State Corporation company) welcomed the forum guests and participants. He noted: "We firmly believe that in any circumstances, including turbulent times, there is place for international cooperation based on objective needs and mutual business-like understanding between partners. The implementation of the Akkuyu NPP project continues, and we are grateful to our Turkish partners for the joint efforts in finding new footholds where necessary. Generally, NPP projects, with their decades-long lifecycles, demonstrate resilience to external changes, and we do our best to ensure that Akkuyu NPP project serves as yet another confirmation of this."

The importance of the Akkuyu NPP project for the development of the Turkish energy sector was highlighted by Esra Songur, Director of Sustainable Development at Akkuyu Nuclear JSC. She noted that the construction of the nuclear power plant has a multiplier effect on the Turkish economy. "This is not only a large-scale construction project today but also a stable source of energy for the future. Türkiye receives a nuclear power plant on its territory, personnel trained to work at nuclear power plants and, importantly, a comprehensive roadmap for the developing nuclear energy that can facilitate future NPP projects based on the experience gained."

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, an occasion celebrated at the Rosatom stand. During the event, Boris Arseev, Director of International Business at Rosatom State Corporation, pointed out that the Russian nuclear industry is celebrating its 80th anniversary as a full-fledged leader in the global nuclear energy industry. The State Corporation currently holds approximately 90% of the global market for large-capacity NPP construction abroad. "By combining extensive experience with a broad range of competencies, Rosatom offers not just a product but a complete ecosystem, including infrastructure development, personnel training, and support in scientific and educational advancement. This integrated approach has become our competitive advantage: it’s the reason countries like Türkiye, Egypt, and Bangladesh trust us not only for NPP construction but also as partners in developing their national industries," he remarked.

State Corporation representatives actively participated in the business program, presenting innovative solutions in both nuclear energy and non-energy applications of nuclear technologies. Specifically, for Central Asia, the Middle East, and Türkiye, Rosatom is proposing projects to create multipurpose research reactors with a capacity of up to 15 MW. These reactors can be used in fields such as nuclear medicine, agricultural product irradiation, and the development of human and scientific expertise. Technologies related to small modular reactors are highly relevant today, and Rosatom is the only vendor that has successfully implemented this technology. Five years ago, the unique floating nuclear thermal power plant, Akademik Lomonosov, was commissioned and has already generated its first billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Production of innovative small RITM-200 reactors with a capacity of 55 MW is underway, and a low-power NPP is currently being built in Yakutia. Additionally, last year saw the signing of the world's first export contract for the construction of SMR project in Uzbekistan.

The Rosatom exhibition this year was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry. Visitors to the booth were introduced to modern high-tech products in both high- and low-power nuclear energy, multifunctional nuclear science and technology centres based on research reactors, and logistical solutions. Representatives from the Akkuyu NPP provided updates on the status of Türkiye's first NPP project. On the occasion of the industry’s anniversary, attendees participated in a quiz about the history of Russia's nuclear energy and the future of nuclear technologies being developed by Rosatom enterprises.

The NPPES-2025 Forum is the leading industry event in Türkiye. This year it gathered more than 1,400 delegates and 212 companies from countries such as South Korea, China, Germany, Italy, France, Bulgaria, Slovenia, etc.

Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant being built in the Republic of Türkiye. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units equipped with Generation III+ VVER reactors of Russian design. The capacity of each NPP power unit will be 1200 MW. Currently, the project is entirely financed by the Russian side. Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry being implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate model. The project is being implemented on the basis of the Intergovernmental Agreement on cooperation in the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu site in the Republic of Türkiye, concluded between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Türkiye. The Russian side and the customer of the project are represented by Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, which has assumed obligations for the design, construction, maintenance, operation and decommissioning of the plant.

In 2025, Russia's nuclear industry celebrates its 80th anniversary: On August 20, 1945, the Special Committee on the Use of Atomic Energy was formed. The USSR was a pioneer and world leader in the peaceful use of atomic energy: Russian nuclear scientists built the world's first nuclear power plant (1954, Obninsk), and the first nuclear icebreaker was created to help the Arctic explorers (1959, the Lenin). Today, Rosatom continues to develop and implement advanced technologies in a wide variety of industries. The state corporation not only builds nuclear power plants, providing clean energy to hundreds of millions of people in dozens of countries around the world, but also ensures the operation of the logistics framework of the Northern Sea Route, produces new materials, develops and manufactures drugs for nuclear medicine. The keynote theme of the anniversary year is defined by three words: pride, inspiration, dream. Nuclear scientists are proud of the feat of the industry's founding fathers. They are inspired by the achievements of previous generations. They plan to conquer new frontiers, expanding the boundaries of possible.  The 80th anniversary of the industry is expected to be celebrated with a number of events, the main of which should be the international forum World Atomic Week, which will be held in Moscow in autumn.

Russia is actively developing international cooperation. The domestic economy is increasing its export potential and supplying goods, services, and was materials all over the world. The implementation of major foreign energy projects also continues. Rosatom and its divisions take an active part in this work.
