Rosatom intends to send the Atom Russian EV to an expedition to the Arctic
aboard the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy.
The vessel is set to leave the port of Murmansk
in the last decade of June. The project "Atom on Icebreaker" is a collaboration
between Atomflot and Rosatom's Fuel Division, which has established an e-mobility
business, and Kama, the developer and producer of the Russian Atom.
The passengers on the voyage will have the opportunity to see a pre-production prototype of the Atom EV and learn about its technical features. The vehicle will be tested on ice in order to evaluate its performance in the challenging Arctic environment.
“The Arctic has long been seen as a difficult environment for electric vehicles, but now we are entering this region with confidence, proving that these challenges are no longer insurmountable. Russian EV technology is not limited to urban areas, demonstrating its capability of operating in any climate, regardless of season, region, or temperature. This is a test of trust of consumers: if a vehicle performs reliably in harsh conditions, it is ready for any daily task. It is significant that the production of an electric vehicle with Rosatom as a technology partner is scheduled for the year of the 80th anniversary of Russia's nuclear industry. The initiative represents a combination of our traditions with new horizons. Russian and Soviet scientists have always been fascinated by the Arctic,” said Alexander Bukhvalov, Director of the Electromobility business at TVEL JSC.
“The Atom is the first electric vehicle created by a team of Russian engineers for Russia. Therefore, it is remarkable that one of our prototypes will make such a voyage – to the Arctic aboard a domestic icebreaker, our nation's pride. This evidences the arrival of electric transport in Russia. Our objective is to ensure its seamless operation: adapting the electric vehicle to the climate, incorporating user-friendly digital features, and providing ongoing support,” commented Igor Povaradnyuk, Director General of KAMA JSC.
Electromobility is
a new promising business venture of Rosatom. TVEL JSC, the managing company of
Rosatom’s Fuel division, is in charge of the business development. Leveraging
the scientific, technological, and manufacturing expertise of its nuclear
companies, Rosatom aims to contribute as much as possible to the fulfilment of
national-scale task including the introduction of EV mass production in Russia,
as well as the development of the necessary infrastructure and regulatory framework. The
companies of Rosatom have the potential for manufacturing approximately 60% of
the components required for an electric vehicle, including car batteries,
electric motors, rare-earth metal magnets, microcomponent substrates, polymers,
and composite materials. The Electric Power Division and the I&C and
Electrical Engineering Division are collaborating to establish a network of EV
charging stations with Russian-made equipment. Furthermore, Rosatom intends to
introduce new services for EV owners on the Russian market.
Atom is the first Russian electric vehicle to be mass produced. It is a robust cutting-edge vehicle that offers a wide range of customization options. The concept behind Atom is a new human-car interaction principle. It is not just about convenience and comfort, but also about emotions. Atom aims to bring joy and happiness into the lives of its owners, becoming an essential part of their daily routine, just like a smartphone. This is the essence of Atom: an EV-gadget.
