Rosatom and the Commissariat for Atomic Energy of Algeria (COMENA) held
their second joint seminar in Algiers, bringing together key stakeholders and
leading companies from Algeria’s healthcare sector.
The event was attended by
representatives from specialized state structures, directors of the nation's
leading medical centers and clinics, stakeholders from the medical sector,
prominent specialists in the fields of oncology and nuclear medicine, as well
as experts from Rosatom Science, Rosatom Construction Technologies, the Medscan
Group of Companies (a subsidiary enterprise of Rosatom and one of the leaders
within Russia's private healthcare sector), Isotop, and others.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mourad Adjal, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy Sources of Algeria, as well as COMENA Commissioner Abdelhamid Mellah. Representatives of COMENA and the Ministry of Health of Algeria detailed the current state of the country's healthcare market and their contributions to the development of the medical sector.
In his opening address, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy Sources of Algeria praised the strong and long-standing bilateral relations between Algeria and the Russian Federation. He noted that this seminar comes at a time when the Algerian government is paying particular attention to the fight against cancer and the use of nuclear medicine in this field, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, which aim to direct investments in nuclear energy towards medical applications. He added that this seminar provides an opportunity to exchange expertise and benefit from the experience of our Russian partner, Rosatom, in the field of nuclear medicine and radioisotope production, in order to strengthen training and technology transfer capacities in this area.
Rosatom experts presented comprehensive solutions aimed at extending and improving quality of life. In particular, Rosatom’s offerings in this field include the production and supply of medical isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals; the development and manufacturing of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for diseases of varying complexity; the construction of medical infrastructure facilities and multifunctional centers for the processing of medical and food products; the production and supply of products for prosthetics, including advanced solutions using additive technologies in implantology and prosthetics; as well as the provision of inbound medical tourism services.
Igor Palamarchuk, Deputy Director General of Rosatom - Middle East and North Africa, noted: "Over the 80 years of the Russian nuclear industry's development, we have accumulated vast experience and established a unique R&D and manufacturing foundation for applying high-tech solutions across a wide variety of industries. Rosatom offers not just a product, but an entire ecosystem. This includes infrastructure development, personnel training, R&D, and support for the advancement of science and education. Rosatom remains the world's only supplier to offer a full production cycle for many of its product lines. This underscores our technological independence and makes us an attractive partner, independent of market volatility. In the field of healthcare, Rosatom offers high-quality products based on proven innovative solutions that help extend people’s life and are aimed at improving their quality of life. We are ready to expand our cooperation with our Algerian partners to make these solutions available here as well."
Cooperation between the Russian Federation and Algeria is carried out on
the basis of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Peaceful
Uses of Atomic Energy, signed on September 3, 2014. In March 2023, Rosatom State
Corporation and the Commissariat for Atomic Energy of Algeria (COMENA) held
their first joint seminar on nuclear energy solutions for key stakeholders and
companies in Algeria’s energy market, during which potential areas of cooperation
between the parties were examined in detail. In September 2023, Rosatom and
COMENA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of nuclear medicine. On
March 26, 2024, on the sidelines of the 13th International Forum
“ATOMEXPO-2024,” Rosatom State Corporation and the Ministry of Energy and Mines
of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria signed a roadmap for cooperation
in the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
Rosatom is a leader in isotope products and ranks among the top-5 global suppliers, producing the broadest range of radionuclides, numbering more than 400 types. Annually, around 2.5 million diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are conducted worldwide using Rosatom's isotopes, which are supplied to 50 countries. During the seminar, Rosatom specialists spoke about opportunities for cooperation in this area.
Thanks to its strong scientific and industrial foundation, Rosatom develops solutions that help increase life expectancy. Rosatom is the largest company in the field of complex disease diagnostics, serially producing high-tech medical equipment (including Brachium, Tianox, Cyclotron, and others); developing biofabrication and organ-printing technologies; and advancing quantum technologies that will enable the creation of personalized medicines. Rosatom is also the largest producer of radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological, cardiological, rheumatological, neurological, and endocrine diseases, and is building the largest radiopharmaceutical production facility in Europe compliant with GMP standards. Rosatom’s energy technologies contribute to environmental protection, reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere and improving air quality, thereby creating a more comfortable living environment. Rosatom’s work in developing new materials and implementing advanced technologies and innovations in healthcare significantly improves quality of life and increases its duration.
In 2025, Russia will mark the 80th anniversary of its nuclear industry. The starting point was the establishment of the Special Committee on the Use of Atomic Energy on August 20, 1945. The outstanding history of the development of peaceful nuclear energy (along the military part) includes numerous unique discoveries and achievements.
