Press release

On May 12, 2026, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation Alexey Likhachev, as part of his working visit to the Republic of Indonesia, held a working meeting with President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto.

The parties discussed promising areas of Russian-Indonesian cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including the development of nuclear power projects, nuclear infrastructure, personnel training, and non-energy applications of nuclear technologies.

“It is particularly important for us that the dialogue between Russia and Indonesia in the nuclear field is developing in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. Today, Indonesia has set ambitious goals for the development of nuclear energy, and therefore we are discussing not only technologies, but the creation of a long-term partnership focused on the development of a new industry for the country, the training of national personnel, the emergence of new competencies, and the strengthening of the country’s technological sovereignty,” said Alexey Likhachev.

He also noted that Rosatom is ready to offer Indonesia a comprehensive approach to the development of its national nuclear program, including both large-scale nuclear power solutions and projects involving small modular reactors and floating power units.

The parties also paid particular attention to the integration of nuclear energy into Indonesia’s power system, taking into account the geographical specifics of the archipelagic state.

The visit program also includes meetings with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, the leadership of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the President Director of the state-owned electricity company PT PLN, as well as the Speaker of the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia.

Russia and Indonesia share a long-standing history of cooperation in the nuclear field. The year 2026 marks an important milestone – the 20th anniversary of the intergovernmental Agreement on the Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. The Agreement was signed on December 1, 2006, and laid the foundation for bilateral cooperation between Russia and Indonesia in the nuclear industry.
