Rosatom completes installation of 4th containment tier ay Akkuyu NPP Unit №3 (Turkey)

Press release

Installation of the 4th tier of an inner containment, one of key components of safety systems of a nuclear power plant, has been completed in the reactor building of Akkuyu NPP Power Unit No. 3. Containment modules ensure leak-tightness of the reactor compartment, act as support for pipelines and a polar crane which is used for nuclear reactor maintenance operations at the NPP operation stage.

Akkuyu NPP power units are equipped with modern and high-tech Generation 3+ WWER-1200 reactor plants of Russian design, which are currently one of the safest in the world. Reactors of this type have a double containment: an inner containment and an outer containment. The outer containment is formed of reinforced concrete and is capable of withstanding any extreme external impacts – earthquakes up to magnitude 9, tsunamis, hurricanes, as well as their combinations.

As Sergei Butckikh, First Deputy Chief Executive Officer of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC – Director of the NPP under Construction, commented on completion of this important construction operation, “All four power units of Akkuyu NPP are being actively built in accordance with the established schedule. At the Unit No. 3, we have completed installation of the 4th tier of an inner compartment, the last of cylindrical ones. The next scheduled operations are welding of the 3rd and 4th tiers, reinforcement operations, and installation of embedded parts, including components of the equipment lock and personnel lock. After that, we will start installing the reactor compartment’s dome part, which comprises three IC modules, including the reactor building’s dome itself, into the design position”.

Справка

AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC is a company of Rosatom State Corporation, which is in charge of design, construction and subsequent operation of Akkuyu NPP.

Akkuyu NPP is the first-ever nuclear power plant in the Republic of Turkey. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units equipped with Generation 3+ WWER reactors of Russian design. The capacity of each NPP power unit will be 1200 MW.

Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry being implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate model.

According to the terms and conditions of the Inter-Governmental Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey, the NPP’s first power unit is supposed to be commissioned within 7 years after obtaining all construction authorizations. With regard to the construction license for Unit 1 was obtained in 2018, the deadline is 2025. At the same time, the project stakeholders are making their best efforts to ensure readiness for the commissioning works at Power Unit No. 1 in 2023, a jubilee year for the Republic of Türkiye.

Russia continues a constructive dialogue with its foreign colleagues, developing cooperation with countries from all over the world and actively forming a multipolar system of international relations. The implementation of major foreign energy projects also continues. Rosatom and its enterprises are actively involved in this activity.
